an in-depth look at the 1970s catalogue of the uruguayan label macondo and the roots of subtropical music: bomba, cumbia, guaracha, merengue, porro, plena featuring 21 tracks by essential names such as sonora borinquen, conjunto casino, combo camagüey, sonora cienfuegos, grupo maracaibo, grupo antillano. set up in the port area of montevideo, macondo discos was founded by the chilean entrepreneur luis onel and named after the town from garcía márquez’s fictional universe. in its early days the label produced a catalogue comprising folk, tango, murga and rock. 1975 onwards, after the release of the lps tropical caliente by cienfuegos and exclusivo! by borinquen, marks the golden age of tropical music in our country according to carlos goberna, founder of sonora borinquen. macondo became a veritable tropical music factory in uruguay, amassing together with guacamayo (a sublabel dedicated to new artists) nearly 200 records in its ten years of existence.

last year saw casablanca-based cosmo records launch its most ambitious project todate, celebrating five years of cross-cultural collaboration. the three vinyl releasesfeatured producers such as san proper, radiq, pier bucci and dandy jack working with moroccan musicians to create a true fusion between modern electronics and ancient traditions. the purpose of cosmo has always been to find a natural meeting place between thesedistinct musical forms, bringing out the best strengths of each practice through real time spent together in the studio, where each artist can truly understand the other in a shared quest for sonic harmony. as such, this latest release marks a step forward in exploring this idea through a new series entitled cosmo jam. as the title suggests, the focus here is on live improvisation. in late 2014 parisian producers masomenos and vadim svoboda travelled to morocco and set up their equipment at the coda casablanca music center. they were joined by m’hamed el menjra playing bass, abdessamad boussahfa on violin and sanhaji on darbuka, and the ensuing jam sessions between these musicians now make their way on to vinyl. no editing or post-production took place – the music you hear on the record was created entirely in the moment. each track highlights the magic of a different instrument – on “be” menjra’s double bass comes twisting through effects processing and subtle distortion, meeting with a low-slung broken beat groove from the visiting french producers. sanhaji’s thrilling percussive flair on the darbuka flirts perfectly with the crisp programming of drums and bass on the uptempo “kaled” and the more laid-back “petit”. boussahfa’s violin makes for some of the most arresting moments on the release, meeting with intricate minimalist rhythms on “mon” and shining in the heart-rending ambience of “frere”. presented across two 12”s, this collection of six tracks tells a most honest account of how gifted artists from entirely different disciplines can find a common ground and create something truly unique. without any studio trickery to hide behind, this is the concept of cosmo records laid bare, and the results prove it is a concept worth exploring further.

dublin based disco imprint fatty fatty phonographics return with the 4th instalment of their downtownsounds classics series, this time throwing three stone-cold classics onto one 12, all given the re-edit treatment by in house producers pablo and shoey. voiced by leroy burgess, with drums by hip hop legend marley marl and production by the aleem brothers, release yourself was a huge across-the-board anthem in the clubs of nyc on its release in 1984. the lads have superglued elements of both the vocal and dub sides together for an epic end of night take on this beloved classic. the b side features two under appreciated classics from the pen of one billy nichols, a man known for his work with west end records (the levan mixed give your body up to the music ) and the funky band of brothers that was bt express. on take me... nichols hooked up with disco master patrick adams for an emotional, string drenched disco belter that has found favour with the likes of dimitri from paris, floating points and hunee. while dance if off is a wonky proto acid-disco trip beloved of rahaan and eric duncan of rub n tug. with copies going for over 300 euros, you can do your bank account and your dancefloor a favour here.

tomoki tamura s holic trax label has been nurturing tuccillo among its many regular artists over the years, and now the italian wonderkid returns with another distinctive run of jams from the wild side of deep house. there s a psychedelic quality to the rich textures that vibrate throughout -g-capsule-, while -pierrot- keeps things lean and limber with some minimal percussion and a cheeky bassline that will work wonders in the mix. -playhead- takes old skool new york house into a modernist mindset, and then -los amigos- finishes off in a more sensual celebration of unconventional house music.

limited repress due to high demand on requests. eating records was born in the brussels underground scene, inspired by the idea of synthesizing two different horizons to get a beautiful concept. in the beginning it was simply the need to go back to roots and try to connect with the present and future, but eventually it ended up with a modern groovy label. the first release of the label was not that easy to find. the eclectic worlds of the two members did not really help them. but that was until they found jr from dallas - a talented dj producer from lille, owner of gourmand music recording - maybe food is the key... who knows ? jr has always been a forward-moving artist, but his music cannot - and should not - be mapped linearly. after releasing on labels as farris wheel recordings and greenhouse recordings, he had nowhere to go but backward for his new ep on eating records to its 90 old school beats and hypnotizing basses. phonical deep is gorgeous and evocative all the same. technival is stylish enough, and it is as restlessly creative as you would expect. it is followed by the hypnotic and beautiful remix of jay bliss of phonical deep - the eps final track. the fact is, jay bliss has managed to create something so refreshingly unique that trying to categorize and label his remix is rather dubious. he transformed the original melodic part to a blissful pad embellished with a repetitive rhythm spiced with tiny subtle details. it is easier to see this remix as the backbone of electronic music - simple and repetitive but never boring.

new years deal - , fresh from guesting on the debut powell lp sport (xl recordings), and having released on labels such as the tapeworm, entracte, and halcyon veil, dale cornish now presents clap - four rhythmic experiments that explore the mesmeric tones of the digital clap using the ever-popular tr909 clap pre-set. sharing similarities in intention with n.m.os as strict as possible approach, pieces subtly evolve and mutate around the clap to generate motion, tension and action. oolovka takes an unashamedly joyous look at the clap, where melodic repetition whirls and whirls until it takes on a form of mesmerising minimalism – perhaps taking its cues from a modern take on steve reichs ‘music for 18 musicians’ as a backdrop for the clap to playfully roll over and mutate into a sound which is both refreshingly light hearted yet steeped in rhythmic experimentation. cxema takes us a into a tenser, more claustrophobic space where a heads down pulse keeps the body locked until the fog is occasionally broken and the tension momentarily cleared via delayed claps and familiar sonar tones. this vibe continues into isolate with cornish upping the anxiety by using the clap as a foreboding menace. coming across like an inspired soundtrack to a military performance piece the concern appears to revolve around strict precision and strict movement and how the clap can be used to enforce and heighten this functional display. before encore winds things down by stripping things back to the bare minimum for movement – a single effected clap gradually layers and layers itself to create pleasingly odd high tension atmospherics solely through a meticulous process of delicate rhythm and repetition.
